Born Gay?

October 8th 2009 11:44
Is a person born Gay? I suppose it depends upon what, exactly, this statement means. I know I was born with the capacity to practice all kinds of behavior. On the other hand, I also know that I was born with a certain skin pigment; I was born with brown hair and hazel eyes; I was born with freckles, but all the aforementioned characteristics are innate, not acquired (a fundamental distinction so often over-looked). None of us can claim we were "born anything" except, perhaps, that we are all "born losers" (i.e., life sucks, we must pay our taxes, and we all will certainly die one day). These are truths none of us can escape regardless of how we fancy ourselves to be born. I don't like my dog but I bought the bitch for my wife and four children. For the past six years, my dog has cost me a small fortune as she continues to urinate and defecate on my wall-to-wall carpet (yes, she has been "house-trained," so please spare me the lectures). Further, I don't like trips to the vet and hefty prices for flea/tic medicine, vaccinations, etc. Nevertheless, I don't abuse or mistreat my dog. On the contrary, everyday I make a willful choice to act humane toward this bitch of a bitch because it's the right thing to do, and the dog's presence makes my wife and kids happy. Was I born a dog-hater? I suppose I could claim this status if I wanted to eliminate all responsibility and carry out some sort of sinister plan to get rid of my dog . . . to follow my natural instincts, excuse my behavior, and call anyone "intolerant" who would dare oppose my beliefs, attitude, and actions related to this matter. Nevertheless, I willfully make a daily choice to love my family and obey the law, so I don't carry out the feelings that often flare up in me concerning the family pet. Consider Michael Vick . . . was he born a dog-hater? I doubt it. The public all but crucified him for his "heinous" crimes and activities, and NEVER allowed him to claim special status (i.e., that he was born with an innate hatred of dogs), which would automatically force us to excuse his behavior. To say, "I was born Gay" is tantamount to saying, "I was born with the propensity to shop too much, eat too much, think too much, talk too much; or, to lie, cheat, steal, fornicate, practice hatred toward minorities, cruelty to animals, and mistreatment of the environment, etc." It is NOT the same as saying "I was born black, white, Hispanic, Indian; or, male or female; or, that I was born with a heart defect, or, with kidneys that do not function," and the list goes on. If you think you were born Gay, then why is it so hard to believe that I was born with a nature and propensity to practice behavior that you might find offensive (e.g., being a dog-hater)? You acknowledge your choices and behavior as an innate part of your genetic make-up, but you refuse to offer me the same "rights" and courtesies you so freely practice, which is hypocrisy, as you know. To my knowledge, no one has ever come out of the womb having sex with the opposite or same sex, and, no one has ever entered this world ready and armed to torture the family pet. If you think you were born Gay, perhaps it's time for you to stop being intolerant of the truth; namely, that you're in the same mess all the rest of us are in. It's plain to see we're all born selfish and we do what we want regardless of the feelings, views, opinions, and rights of others. We act like animals even though we are not, and we make choices everyday to follow our impulses, or, to make the hard decisions and act accordingly (i.e., obey the law and act sacrificially on behalf others and our communities where we live). Conversely, we demand that everyone be tolerant of our behavior in spite of how harmful it might be to ourselves, and/or, offensive and hurtful to others. Indeed, we're all in the same mess . . . and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's the truth.
